Full Catastrophe Living: Using the wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain, and Illness
By Jon Kabat-Zinn
Full Catastrophe Living is the cornerstone of the 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program that we teach at the Mindfulness Center.   Kabat-Zinn, founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, offers the book as a great introduction for anyone who has considered meditating but was afraid it would be too difficult or would include religious practices they found foreign.  Kabat-Zinn focuses on "mindfulness," defined as living in the moment, paying attention, and simply "being" rather than "doing."

Wherever Your Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life
by Jon Kabat-Zinn
This book is a great addition for Full Catastrophe Living. The chapters are brief, filled with stories, poems, and lots of information on working with the stressors of life and living more effectively from our inner wisdom.  Kabat-Zinn describes several different meditative practices and makes learning these meditations simple.  The short stories throughout the book are delightful.

Guided Mindfulness Meditation: Series 1
by Jon Kabat-Zinn
This CD set accompanies the 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program taught at the University of Mass Medical Center.  The four practices in this set include the Body Scan, Sitting Meditation, and 2 Yoga sessions.  Each practice is approximately 45 minutes in length.  The meditations can be practiced at any level of intensity the listener chooses and Kabat-Zinn has a gentle, quiet style, guiding the listener through each meditation to focus attention and increase mindfulness, providing clear directions and offering suggestions throughout each aspect of the program. We highly recommend purchasing this CD series for times when you are able to practice for 45 minutes. Alternatively, the Mindfulness Center CDs (which are also available on this site), are based on the same principles as Kabat-Zinn’s but are only 30 minutes in length.

Dream Work
by Mary Oliver

From the publisher: Dream Work, a collection of forty-five poems, follows both chronologically and logically Mary Oliver's American Primitive, which won the Pulitzer Prize for the finest book of poetry published in 1983 by an American poet. The depth and diversity of perceptual awareness--so steadfast and radiant in American Primitive--continue in Dream Work. Additionally, she has turned her attention in these poems to the solitary and difficult labors of the spirit--to accepting the truth about one's personal world, and to valuing the triumphs while transcending the failures of human relationships

New and Selected Poems: Volume One (Hardcover)
by Mary Oliver
From the publisher: When New and Selected Poems, Volume One was originally published in 1992, Mary Oliver was awarded the National Book Award. In the fourteen years since its initial appearance it has become one of the best-selling volumes of poetry in the country. This collection features thirty poems published only in this volume as well as selections from the poet's first eight books. Mary Oliver's brilliantly crafted poems about the natural landscape and the fundamental questions of life and death have won high praise from critics and readers alike.  Oliver's passionate demonstrations of delight are powerful reminders of the bond between every individual, all living things, and the natural world.

New and Selected Poems, Volume Two(Paperback)
by Mary Oliver
From Publishers Weekly
Following by 13 years her National Book Award–winning New and Selected Volume One, this big and very quotable collection offers more of what Oliver's fans revere: optimistic, clear and lyrical explorations of varying ecosystems, (especially the birds, mammals, ponds and forests of the northeastern U.S.) mingled with rapt self-questioning, consolation and spiritual claims some might call prayers. 42 new poems along with poems reprinted from six earlier books (beginning with 1994's White Pine) broaden the focus to insect life, to weather and the seasons and to other parts of the U.S.; while most poems use a mellifluous free verse, some choose the simplicities of prose, a form best achieved in Winter Hours

Why I Wake Early: New Poems (Paperback)
by Mary Oliver
From the Publisher:   "Mary Oliver continues to tutor us in attention, gratitude, and reverence in this new collection of forty-seven poems."—Frederick and Mary Brussat, Spirituality and Health.  "The gift of Oliver's poetry is that she communicates the beauty she finds in the world and makes it unforgettable"
—Miami Herald

Kitchen Table Wisdom 10th Anniversary (Paperback)
by Rachel Naomi Remen
This is one of our all-time favorite books – each brief chapter is filled with stories, wisdom, and gentle reminders about waking up.  Here’s what a few others say about this book:  I recommend this book highly to everyone. (Deepak Chopra, M.D.) This is a beautiful book about life, the only true teacher. (Bernie Siegel, M.D.) Rachel Naomi Remen is nature's gift to us, a genius of that elusive and crucial capacity, the human heart. (Daniel Goleman, Ph.D., author of Emotional Intelligence)

My Grandfathers Blessings : Stories of Strength, Refuge, and Belonging (Paperback)
by Rachel Naomi Renme
From Publishers Weekly: "My grandfather was a scholar of the Kabbalah, the mystical teachings of Judaism," Remen tells us. He taught her that the "spark of God" exists, even in the most unpromising places. Through a series of unpretentious, affecting vignettes, the author of the bestseller Kitchen Table Wisdom encourages readers to recognize and celebrate the unexpected blessings in their own lives. Many of her recollections are linked to her experiences as a medical student and a physician working with cancer patients, but the most memorable ones relate to Remen's deep engagement with her grandfather, who died when she was seven. She gently illustrates her advice through simple yet powerful stories. "Wisdom," Remen writes in this exceptional book, "lies in engaging the life you have been given as fully and courageously as possible and not letting go until you find the unknown blessing that is in everything."
